The 2010 Bike Ride

12th September 2010

The Foulness Ride

We are delighted to once again offer the opportunity to cycle on this lovely local island that cannot normally be entered without a special pass.

On Sunday September 12th the Foulness Bike Ride will be staged using a new starting place and a new route that incorporates, for the first time, an opportunity to visit the villages of both Churchend and Courtsend while raising funds for the Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation Bosom Pals Appeal. Family bikers

The flat terrain and quiet roads make the island a perfect place for cycling. Riders of all ages and abilities can reach Churchend, the island's quiet old main village. The four mile circuit beyond the village includes a short stretch of gravelled road suitable only for touring cycles or mountain bikes with stout tyres. Three circuits round this will complete your 23 mile trip and allow you to reach the most isolated part of the island. The area is rich in wildlife and a haven for birds. You stand a good chance of seeing avocet, geese, herons, kestrels, merlins and many other birds. Canada gooseVisit the Heritage Centre being developed by the local residents and see dramatic pictures of the 1953 floods. Enjoy refreshments and entertainment at Great Wakering Primary School where the ride starts. Why not get a group of your family and friends together and have a really enjoyable day out whilst giving a boost to deserving local charities. Route: The ride starts from Great Wakering Primary School in Great Wakering High Street. Just follow the yellow traffic signs. For those bringing cycles by car there is adequate car parking at the school. The route round the island is fully signposted with marshals at all key points and roving marshals in case of emergency. Water will be provided and limited refreshments are available on the island but we suggest you take some with you. St John Ambulance staff will be on hand for the riders and a mobile cycle repair facility provides first aid for the bicycles! A map and detailed safety instructions will be issued to all those taking part. As in previous years this event is organised by members of the Rotary Club of Thorpe Bay who provide their services and resources free of charge.

Sponsorship

This is the most important source of money for our chosen charity. Please try and get as much support for your ride as you can.
